In the past I have discussed some of the issues to consider if you are thinking about playing sports in college. But the New York Times recently raised another issue to consider if you are thinking about playing college sports.
It turns out that in many cases, student athletes will be responsible for their medical bills if they are injured playing a sport. The problem is that many athletes rely on their parents health insurance which often excludes coverage for varsity sports. Even those students that buy extra coverage may not have adequate coverage since the quality of policies vary widely.
So, if you are planning on playing sports in college, make sure you clearly understand the health insurance coverage you have from whatever source. No one plans on being injured, but in case it happens, you need to be protected.
