According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, 19,230 students were in the 2011 entering class of medical students, an increase of 3%.
At the same time the number of applicants to medical school increased by 2.8% to 43, 919. Of these 32,654 were first time applicants while the others had applied to medical school at least once before. The overall acceptance rate was just shy of 44% which is consistent with the acceptance rate for the past few years.
