Syracuse University

The fifth college on my recent tour was Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York.

Syracuse is a fairly large research university with 13,000 undergraduates and an additional 6,000 graduate and professional students.  Students are from all 50 states and 124 foreign countries.

Because Syracuse is a large university with nine different colleges, we didn’t have time to explore all of the colleges. The three colleges we visited were the School of Architecture, the Whitman School of Management, and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication.

All three of the colleges we visited have competitive admissions with the most competitive being the School of Public Communication. As might be expected, the School of Architecture probably has the least competitive admissions from an academic standpoint but the creative requirements for Architecture are the critical part of the admissions package.

Greek life has a presence on campus but only about 20% of the students participate. There is the main, or North Campus, and the South Campus, with much of the housing located at the South Campus.

The college has 20 varsity teams that play Division I sports in the Big East. The basketball team has historically been one of the strongest basketball teams in the country.

Syracuse is selective with a mid range of SAT score of 1,050 to 1,270 for the SAT Reading and Math sections.  The college accepts about 77% of the students that applied early decision and 60% of those who applied regular decision.

The college has substantial need based financial aid available for students and meets on average 95% of the financial need of its students.  There are also merit based awards available. It should be noted that the average loan owed at graduation is somewhat higher than typical at almost $28,500.

If you are considering a larger college with reasonable admissions standards, and you like big time sports, Syracuse should be on your list of colleges to consider.

You can trust us to help you find the best college for your needs. We offer a FREE 1/2 hour consultation to discuss your needs for college admissions counseling. Give us a call now at 888-970-BSMD(2763) or drop us an email.
