It is not news that the University of California is having financial difficulties because of the economy in California. The UC system announced last year that they were accepting more out-of-state students who could pay the cost of out-state tuition.
Now, the Los Angeles Times is reporting that the UC campuses are affirmatively recruiting out-state students. Admissions counselors from various campuses are traveling throughout the US as well as internationally to find students willing to pay the extra $23,000 per year in tuition that non-residents pay.
If you live outside California, have a desire to attend one of the UC campuses and can afford to pay the full cost of attending one of these campuses, now is the best time to be applying. However, while it is now easier to get admission into the UC system there is a very real downside.
The economic down turn has resulted in the UC system making cuts throughout the colleges. Professors are being let go and class sizes are increasing. You will be paying as much as many private colleges without getting the benefits of small class sizes and improved faculty student interactions.
Keep these issues in mind before you get too excited about the possibility of attending the University of California as an out-state student.
