Should You Limit Your BS/MD Choices to Accelerated Programs?

9496613318_30a19b9522_mI sometimes have students tell me that they are only interested in accelerated BS/MD programs. While it is up to the student to decide what they want in a program, I typically discourage that approach to selecting BS/MD programs.

Why?

About half of the BS/MD programs are not 6 or 7 year programs. They last a full 8 years. By limiting yourself to only the 6 and 7 year programs you are effectively eliminating half of the BS/MD programs from consideration. Given how difficult it is to gain admission to a BS/MD program to start with, not considering half of the programs isn’t always a good move.

Yes, there is a time advantage from getting through medical school in less than 8 years.  For some students that advantage outweighs the disadvantage of increasing the chances that you won’t be accepted to any program because of the limits you have put on.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying you should never limit the number of BS/MD programs you apply to and should apply to as many as you possibly can. That is not a good move either. But, in deciding where you want to apply, you have to ask if the shortened time frame is an issue important enough to limit the potential advantages of all of the BS/MD programs.

For me, it is but one of the issues to consider in deciding where to apply. If a student tells me that this is one of their criteria then I consider that in which programs I recommend.

The takeaway here is that it is in your best interest to consider all of the factors involved in BS/MD admissions rather than making the length of the progam the only criteria.

    Morayo,

Thank you for the note. There are a limited number of BS/MD programs that will consider applications from international students. Here is a link to a post on my website that lists each program that will consider international students in admissions to BS/MD programs: http://cap1.wpengine.com/bsmd-programs/bsmd-programs-admit-international-students/

The application season for BS/MD programs is over for students seeking admission in Fall 2015. Most BS/MD program applications are due between November 1 and December 1 of the year proceeding admission.
