Are You Majoring in the Minors?

This is a guest post by Kelly Kilpatrick who blogs about online colleges.  Enjoy. Todd

Questions parents and students should ask when considering a field of study, career or selecting a college or university, en route to a promising future.

Who do you want to be?  What do you want to do or accomplish?  When do you definitely intend to achieve it?  How are you going to achieve it?

Though these are tough questions to even ask yourself you must first consider your ultimate purpose and why you are heading in a particular direction.  Answering these questions clearly and concisely as possible will guarantee that your decisions will be the best choice you can make.

Where Is The Passion?

Forget trying to become what others think you should be or what’s the best way to make a quick buck out of a career.  What’s important is applying your passion and what you really love to do to your college studies.  It allows you to have more energy and become more excited about the topic than researching the Statistics in Micro-Economics – unless you are really into that.

1.       Write down the top ten things you love to do and select the one that is your utmost desire and you will never go wrong.

What Do You Want To Accomplish… In The End?

Often, students looking to enroll into college undermine one of the most important things – The End Result.  Is your planned field or career eventually bringing you what you want in the long run?  Or does it fulfill some kind of need for the short term?

Remember that if the career or degree does not take you where you want to be in the end, it’s taking you away from it.  What good is a degree in health when you love to spend all your free time writing or practicing photography?

2.       Write down a list of things you want to accomplish in life and how the career or field of study will play a part in helping you accomplish that goal.

How And When Will You Achieve It?

Ok.  You’ve decided to change your career and follow your passion of becoming a magnificent chef within the next 4 years.  What are the steps you need to take in your process of becoming the magnificent chef?  What are the necessary resources in order for you to transform your life into your dream life?

3.       Write down when you definitely intend to finish your goals

a.       Keep a list of at least 6 things you would need to do to move you forward towards your goal.
b.      Make absolutely sure that you carry this around all the time to remind you and ensure you’ll achieve those goals.
c.       Join a college group in the field or career and have them monitor your progress and hold you accountable for your results.

Remember, goals are dreams with deadlines so be very clear about what you want, when you want it and how you’re going to achieve it will virtually guarantee your success.
